Screenshot of 4:3 vs 16:10

I've got a Dell 2407 16:10 1920x1200 and it's awesome. I was looking at my next upgrade and noticed the new Dell 27" is now 16:9 only, not much of a change in screen real estate. However, the Dell 30" is 16:10 and is close to 50% more real estate than the 24" and at an staggering 2560x1400 resolution. I want! Unfortunately it's £1k :/

Correct, 16:9 is the typical TV widescreen ratio, 16:10 is supposed to be the typical PC widescreen ratio, but as said, it's declining.

Sucks for top-down games like Heroes of Newerth and Starcraft 2, you can't just put the FoV up like in an FPS. If you buy a 16:9 monitor you get a very significant increase in screen real-estate compared to 4:3.

Maannn why do they do that?

Shouldn't 16:10 see exactly same as 16:9, expect a bit more vertical?

i have 16:9 and 16:10 monitors but always prefer the 16:10

I was adamant I wanted 16:10 when I bought this samsung 24" about 2.5 years ago but would prefer 16:9 now. I just think a 16:9 monitor with a couple of HDMI ports is a very useful thing to have but a 16:10 monitor with a DVI port is a bit of a white elephant. I know I could get adapters and try and use the consoles with it and get them centered and not stretched but I can't be bothered. Lots of devices have 16:9 HDMI outputs now mainly phones, cameras and probably the new gen of hand-helds. 16:9 monitors were more expensive at the time and there wasn't many of them.
