Just an *idea* at the moment, but I'm really into the Zotac motherboard & this GFX too. The rest, however, I'm unsure about.

Is it really the right CPU?

Is the memory correct?

Overclocking possibilities?

Enough room for this case?

Answers on a postage stamp thank you.

couple things, for the price you are paying for that HDD you could get something with more space, any reason why you picked that one? You are aware that that is a 2.5" HDD when the case says it can support 3.5". I imagine the graphics card will just about squeeze in there, might want to check tho (providing you definately want to go with that one). Also according to the OCUK site that mobo only supports up to 800mhz ddr2 you have selected 1066 i think. Might work, however i'd rather be on the safe side. You could get this HDD

That spec makes no sense, gfx on a mb but then you get a separate gfx card.
You will be hard pressed removing heat in a tiny case.

is this for gaming and do you really want a tiny case?

To be honest, I generally thought using a smaller hdd might help with space and heat.

Memory, again I honestly don't know whats best.

I do want to keep the mobo/gfx zotac combo. I know it might sound silly but its what I want to try.

Its the CPU/MEM combo I'm unsure of, the rest is easily changeable.

I picked the case because it looks good, stylish and simple but I am open to the idea of others?

Ultimately I want to build a mini gaming platform.....

That mother board does little or no overclocking and is designed for HTPC builds and media centres i dout the board will cope well with that graphics card.

The graphics card will not fit in the case as the case can only take cards that are 9inches long and that card is 10.5inches.

Also the psu will not be able to power the graphics card underload and i would dout that it has enough power plugs to do so.

what is the build going to be used for and why have you gone for that size maybe we can advise you on a more suitable build?

EDIT: seen you last post really you need to be looking at a microatx build a slightly larger case and then you can use that gfx i would recomend a different mobo that one you picked was never designed to handle a card like that.

Your CPU is fine i have one great CPU's the ram was good too just slightly too fast. look for the speed in mhz drr2 8500 is 1066 speed you want drr6400 which is 800

it can only take 9in long cards as stated in my post ( dont want to be rude, just would hate the OP to buy a card that didnt fit!)

I disagree. There is a fellow on xtreme running a overclocked quad core on one of these boards, and dual cores are rather easier to overclock. People on here have them running at 400fsb. There is also no reason whatsoever to believe it can't use that graphics card.
The e8400 is fantastic, but as the board isn't going to hit properly high fsb you may find you're happier with the x10 multiplier of the e8600.

You might want 800mhz ram, you might not. At 1:1 800 mhz will take you to 400fsb which is probably enough but will mean your motherboard and ram hit their limits in similar places. Since the e8600 runs 4ghz at 400fsb, or the e8400 runs 3.6ghz, this might not matter.

Power supply in that box isn't going to feed a 4870x2 or a 285 gtx. It's also sfx standard which makes replacement interesting. There is a lian li mini itx case which you might find suits you better as it'll take a normal psu.

Mini itx gaming can be done these days, but micro atx would still make your life rather easier. Your call mate.

Aye, but you're also paying to have it fit in a very small box. Alternative socket 775 mini itx boards with pci-e x16 slots are thin on the ground, I believe the only competitor to that zotac board is the cheaper zotac board

First of all, what is this going to be used for? Media, gaming, video encoding?
Secondly, why are you spending nearly £300 on a CPU and board with a socket that is dying? Would it not be better to go down the AMD route or if at all possible i7?

Usually a good idea to state what your intended use for this is and your budget. People can then tell you the best build for your money and needs.

*Edit whoops I found your post stating mini gaming system, my bad.*

i5 is a different socket, so won't work with the x58 chipset.
I agree that i5 will be pitched at replacing the core 2 range. The reason I'm not overly excited by that is the increase in performance between c2q and i7 isn't massive, so that between c2q and i5 will be even less. It will presumably still be quicker.

It would seem to be a strange thing for intel to do, but then nothing is forcing them to sell 920 chips as cheaply as they are
