SCSI Drives - keep getting kernel panic on install

Hi all

Today I have mostly been trying to reconfigure my fileserver moving from an old debian sarge install to a more complete server/router distro such as SME, clarkconnect 4, ebox.

I had 4x IDE drives in it before, and I have 8x 9.1 gig SCSI drives here I'd like to use as the system storage space.

My board is a ASUS P2B-DS with onboard 7890 scsi chip. when installing any of these distros it fails at the formatting stage after about 11-22% with a kernel panic. I beleive the drives are connected properly as I had booted from my old ide drive and configured a Soft Raid that way.

I have 4 drives on each of the 68 pin connectors.

This didn't actually produce as much speed as I'd hoped, so I thought well one small scsi system drive, and plonk 5x 160gigs IDE will work a treat, but his problem also appears if I use only 1 drive to install to.

Googling brings up a lot of stuff but nothing quite seems to help here.

Anybody got this board?

Anyone had a similar problem?

Any ideas?

Regards
