Returned from work today to find my dad not around which is unusual as he normally potting around with his new bike, to find he was up the hospital.
today we was fixing machinery in work which was loaded with rubbish and needed to move it to get at the engine when a used hypodermic needle pierced his skin from one of the bags he moved which has several other things in like foil etc when opened. So he has been up the hospital all day, where has had several hepatitis shots etc and need to come back next month, now he did take the needle with him as well for them to look at. What little information they told him was he would need a series of shots and can take a few months for the results to come back. Has anyone gone through this? Surely it does not take this long to get results?

I really think sometimes there needs to be some seriously well managed communal way of disposing of certain normal, yet hazardous materials.

In holland, they have enormous bottle bank skips that you can basically "chuck" the bottle in and the inside is inaccessible by humans (well, locked down). There should clearly be a way of doing something similar for knifes / needles too in this country - if not from a recycling POV, but from a safe disposal POV. I still have a huge rusty kitchen knife that is sharp as hell I have no idea how to safely dispose of it, its not like I want to walk down the street with it...

IIRC,things like HIV only live outside a body for a very short while (seconds).

People who get jabbed by needles within a few moments of it being inside someone else are at a higher risk.

I know someone who got stuck with a needle that was left discarded for a while. All tests came back clear. Very worrying tho'!

The longer it is out of the body, the less chance off cross infection, so at least there is comfort in that.

Finally, and this is from a medical pro (not me). If you sleep with a HIV infected person, you have a 1 in 1000 chance of contracting it (hetro sexuals only).

Also you can get same day results. Contact your local GUM clinic and ask for a same day HIV test - You have to ask for the same day it is not offered normally. (if that is probably the biggest concern).

HIV can take 3 months to test positive, but around 95% of tests will show positive within 4 weeks.

Personally, I would not stress too much over it, easier said than done, but the odds are stacked in your dad's favour.

Hope this doesn't constitute medical advice:

How long can HCV live outside the body and transmit infection?

Recent studies suggest that HCV may survive on environmental surfaces at room temperature at least 16 hours, but no longer than 4 days.

HIV's very fragile outside the body iirc, so hopefully that's not really a concern.

Hope everything goes well for your Dad. Damned irresponsible junkies.

I cant see scag heads popping down to the local ASDA to throw away used needles tbh dude

YEah I think HIV can never really last outside the body for more than 24 hours, even in good conditions, but don't know about other ones.

Still there's no excuse for this they can go to a chemist and get a sharps box for free and be able to put needles in it (and get needles for free) and take them back to be safely disposed of, for free no questions asked

So there's more HIV up the back passage as it where then?

So a straight couple going up the oxo tower would be at just as much risk yeah?

It can take up to 4 months for HIV to become apparent. Not that you want to hear that. I presume they tested the needle?.

Edit: Again with the slow tab browsing *must learn to refresh!*. Hope he's ok bro.

Um, yes. It is because that passage can facilitate the transfer of fluids more easily.

Still odds of 300:1 tho'

Interesting, *I hate uni, it means I have access to journals and will now waste the rest of tonight reading up on the biochemistry as to why this happens* :(

4 Months wow, yes the needle has been tested but no results yet.

Hope he's ok :)

Buy a good bottle(s) of scotch, and have a whiskey tasting night with him, it's what me and my dad always did (since i was 14) when there was ever an important thing to talk about while watching Fraser on tape when the rest of the family was asleep at 1 or 2 am, some of my best memories of my dad come from those nights, where we could talk about anything without having my brother or mum knowing, and having a good laugh together :)

Generally spend the day after his or my birthday doing this with him, just us two, and the whisky sample box's we always get for each other:D

In all seriousness, I hope your dad has nothing to worry about as the viruses have big trouble living outside the host body. Just take reassurance in the fact the in a bin bag at night will drop to very low temps, deffo not room temp 22 - 25oc.
