Anyone using the:

Scythe NINJA PLUS Rev.B" 6Heat Pipes CPU Cooler

or

Thermalright HR-01

With no fan? If so, what are your specs? Any good? What CPU (Max) can the Fanless version be used for?

I want to use one without a fan. I have an AMD 3500 CPU.

Out of the 2 above, which would you recommend as the best for cooling and no noise?

Hi there,

Did you post on SPCR?

Well if not-

HR-01 works well when ducted to a 120mm exhaust.

Scythe Ninja will work good passive, but this also depends on the enviorment.

SPCR is silent pc review and as you probably guessed thats where most of the info related to running a pc silently or passively can be found.

If i were you i would get the ninja, and put a nexus at 5v on it, which is silent from about 30cm.
The different between no air (convection) and a small amount of forced airflow is massive, so having that nexus at 5v on it would make a massive difference to cooling ability and it would still be silent from a short distance away.

Have you taken care of all your other potentially noisy components?
No point making an effort with the cpu cooler if you have a harddisk sitting in there with no steps taken towards silencing it.

The Ninja fan at 900 is silent, so really unless you're totally anal with noise I wouldn't bother replacing the fan. Similar levels to the Seasonic PSU.

I wasn't very impressed with mine at all, lots of bearing noise at any speed, but i may have got a dodgy one. I was assuming that if he was considering a passive solution he probably is 'totally anal with noise ' ;)

Best thing to do is to try the fan it comes with and if thats not quiet enough the nexus will be.

However as i said no point making such an effort with the cpu if you have other noisy components...

All my other components are quiet. The Seasonic PSU is almost silent as i cannot hear it at all. My hard drive is suspended. VGA card has a Zalman on it.

What is the best way to reduced the speed of the fan? One of these:

Fan Speed Limiter Cable

Looks like i am edging towards the Ninja then. Please keep your views coming guys. great.

You can modify the molex cable for the fan in order to change the fan speed. There are a few guides around. A quick search on google found me this.

To remove the molex pins just use some tweezers or something similar. You can always put the pins back to how they were and it's free, better than paying for something to do the same thing.

Thanks. I will look into that.

The: Scythe S-FLEX 800RPM Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3/4 pin (FG-003-SY)

Scythe_Fan.jpg

- Dim: 120 x 120 x 25mm
- Rated speed: 800 RPM
- Sound: 8.7 dB(A)
- Air flow: 33.5 CFM
- Bearing: S-FDB

Is this the one that is supplied with the Scythe Ninja?

These are the specs of the supplied fan:

Fan
Dimensions: 120 x 120 x 25mm
Noise Level: 20.94dBA
Air Flow: 49.58 CFM
Speed: 1,200rpm (±10%)
Bearing Type: Sleeve Bearing

So it (closely) matches the 1200rpm version

I just did the 5v Mod on my Nexus 120mm fan and it is so much quieter!! Keeping an eye on the temps and so far my CPU temp is about 32 Motherboard 34. Awesome.

I got my ninja today, and the stock fan is best at 12V (no difference in noise at 5V).

Its got loads of bearing noise and well I'm ordering a Yate Loon to replace it.

Thanks.

Glad its not just me who found i got a lot of bearing noise. As you say, undervolting it doesn't do a lot because of the bearing noise, which is a shame.

Quieter? I can't hear my nexus at 5v unless i stick my ear right next to it, its completely silent from a distance of about 30cm. Fantastic little fan. The 80mm nexus i got is even better, can't hear that from 30cm at 12v.

Yea, same here. Can't hear it unless i put my ear next to it. All i can hear now is the PSU fan which i didn't notice before!! I have a Seasonic 500w PSU.

Same.
All i'm left with is my 2nd raptor spinning, which i need to get a box for. If i disconnect that all thats left is the S12 500.
When thats all you can hear i reckon thats an achievement... ;)
