Scythe Server Kaze Fan Controller very dim display - is this normal?

I've just bought a Scythe Server Kaze fan controller 5.25, and plugged it all in and hooked up two case fans. All seems ok, apart from two things:

1) The display flickers (which seems odd for LCD)
2) The display is VERY dim

You press the 'on' button and the display comes up but it's pretty faint, not what I expected at all (I'm sure it was brighter in review video's?). Does anyone have one that could comment?

EDIT: Looking at this review http://www.overclockers.com/scythe-kaze-server-fan-controller-review/ it looks like it 'might' be normal Even front on however they are still VERY dim

Just got home, and looked at this again. Even head on, it's very dim and flickering... something definately iffy here. Will have a fiddle later (might be a bad power connection?)
