Scythe Zipang

Why do you want one, out of interest?

I had one, and its cooling performance was decidedly mediocre. Okay, it is quiet, but there are plenty of quiet solutions that are better alternatives - such as sticking some silent fans on a Megahalems, Silver Arrow, Ultra, NH12, etc.

It is for use in a Silverstone LC17 media PC where height and noise is an issue. I have an i5 750 which generates a surprising amount of heat!

Ah right. Well, you know despite its top-down configuration, the Zipang is still bloody enourmous! Would be worth checking if it would actually fit in a media case.

Scythe did bring out the Zipang 2 a couple of years ago, so you might be able to find one of those. They also make the Shuriken, which is a quiet, low-profile cooler. Or there's the Glacialtech Igloo 5750.

None of these offer cooling equal to the better standard HSF combinations, but they are all low-profile(ish) and quiet. OcUK sell the Scythe Shuriken if you decide to go for that one.

Yeah I remember checking and think the zipang and zipang 2 fit fine. I have loads of width etc just only about 14cm height. I was thinking of getting a xigmatek nepartak which is an excellent low profile cooler, but I know the fan will have to spin quite fast for it to shift the heat.

On a side note, I am cooling it with a freezer 7 pro at the moment but I have a spare Zalman CNPS9500 with the correct mounting hardware. Do you think it is worth me trying that on my i5 750? Or do you think that cooler has seen better days?

I also have a scythe mine Rev b which is too tall. I have been thinking of trying to bend it to lean over and fit in the case, but I don't want to destroy it for nothing...

Thanks for your advice BTW!

Well, as I say, the Zipang's cooling is by no means stellar! I saw drops of around 12C moving from that to a Megahalems with a Sharkoon SE at the same clocks, so that gives you some idea of how far off it is from the better upright coolers.

With that in mind, it's probably worth giving the CNPS9500 a go. I doubt it would be very much worse than the Zipang for cooling, so if it fits, you could save yourself some dosh!

Cheers for the info. Hearing some real world figures is worth far more than a bogus review! I will open her up today and fit the zalman and see what kind of temps I get. The stock cooler I received in the box is so light and flimsy looking, I am really baffled how they ever expected it to adequately cool a quad core CPU with 8MB cache...

you could get the Noctua NH-C14, its the best low profile cooler out there.

the zalman 9500 is still an ok cooler and better than a freezer 7 pro so i would give that a try first.

I love the look of the noctua but it is a bit rich for my blood! Gonna try the Zalman and maybe see if I can do a ghetto mod on the scythe mine.
