Just ordered a new 5D MkII, and I'm looking into "fast" cards now. I notice a new adapter on the market for SDHC SDXC to CF, supposed to support UDMA too.

Anyone tried these ? I'm rather partial to buying more CF cards these days, since they seem to be phasing out for the much smaller SD* cards (which I have quite a few already!) - I much rather buy class 10 SD cards for example...

Also, anyone tried the new "fast" UDMA cards themselves ? some claim very high speeds (x600, 90MB/s etc) and I wonder if they are really that good, or if it's marketing blob.

I use an SD to CF adapter in a 50D, and for RAW shooting it really can't cut it. Only use a class 4 card in it, however whenevrr I have used a class 10, speeds didn't really change much. Doing a quick burst for things like sport (unlikely on a 5DII but the burst rate will trade off with the increased file size) will regularly leave you with "Busy" flashing in the viewfinder as it's taking a long time to write. Hell even a single shot takes about 5 seconds to write.

Using a friends 400x UDMA card, however, writing is near instant, the buffer with jpeg is near impossible to fill and even RAW files write so quickly it's a non issue.

It pretty much boils down to, SD cards will save you money but you will be constantly fearing having "Busy" pop up at a vital moment, or spend a bit more on CFs (even the non UDMA CFs are a lot better) but enjoy the write speeds being a complete non issue.

After a bit of research I had reached the same conclusion; too slow.

You can find 16GB X300 UDMA cards for about 20 quid, no real need to try to "save" on that...
