SD Card for an old Macbook.

Hey guys.

I have an old Macbook Pro which is fantastic. It's a 2015 model and seems to be bullet proof!

So it already has a 1tb SSD. But I was looking at it and notice that it also has a SD card slot. I'm sure there'll be some 'gotcha' that prevents such an easy and elegant storage upgrade, but would I be able to buy a large capacity SD in order to double my Macbook's storage space? Or to use as a backup for the main drive?

Looking online, 1tb SD cards seem quite expensive, but what about Micro SD's? Are adapters available?

Many thanks!

SD to Micro SD adaptors are readily available and often come with micro SD cards.
The things to watch are going to be:
What capacity does the reader on your macbook support? IIRC some older SD card readers had maximum sizes of cards they supported, but I think that may only apply to readers older than the one that is likely in your macbook (I know I had to buy a couple of newer card readers for better size and speed support over the years.
The price of the cards, they're often more expensive than other options.
Make sure you buy from a reputable retailer - a large amount of higher capacity SD, and micro SD cards being sold through some sites are fake (smaller cards with dodgy firmware to report a fake capacity).

For a backup for the macbook I'd probably look at a proper external hard drive of some kind, either an SSD based unit or something like a Western Digital Mypassport, although those obviously can't be as easily used on the go and are not as compact as plugging something completely into the SD card slot.

Thank you. That's helpful.

Good tip on the reputable seller. Seen a lot of weird Chinese-named cards that are incredibly cheap. I'll stick to the big brands and sellers. I do back up to an external HDD, I was just considering more options.

I'll have to check on the card-reader specs. I also use a later iMac which also has a slot so should be quite handy. Though it depends on the read/write speeds I guess...

Thanks again.

If you want good quality cards then the Nintendo branded ones are very good and offer decent transfer speeds (they are made by SanDisk).
Only downside is they are slightly more expensive, but I've not heard of them being faked unlike some brands.
