Guys bought the gf a camera for here bday its nothing special. Just something for her to take on holiday and not worry about loosing it or breaking it.

16 gig or 32 will do. What's the difference on the class of the card. Bit confused.

The class of the card represents the speed at which it can read and write data. If it's a compact camera, which it is from the sounds of it, in all likelihood even a Class 4 card would be quick enough as very few compacts take photos in high enough resolution with high enough frame rates to really start pushing any memory cards. What's probably more worth looking into is making sure you get a reputable brand and model so that you don't have the card fail halfway through shooting and then losing all your files.

The review systems on most electronics shops are a fairly good indicator of whether it's a safe bet or not so look for ones with comfortable 4.5 or 5 star ratings and you can't really go wrong.
