Hey, got a Nikon D3100 for Christmas yesterday. Just looking at getting a decent SD card for it. At the minute I'm using a 2GB Sandisk Ultra II that I use in my compact camera.

From what I've heard, class is important. I think I read somewhere that the D3100 needs a class 6 to record 1080p properly.

I've always tended to stick to SanDisk memory cards in all my devices, but there are some really tempting prices on Transcend memory cards. I can pick up a 16GB Class 10 SDHC card for £15 from a reputable website. They seem to be getting good reviews?

You are better off getting 2x4gb or 2x8gb instead of 1 big card as it reduces the risk of al your photos getting lost if the card gets corrupt.

Yes, class 6+ is better for instant read+write, especially for video.

I've always stayed away for Transcend as I know nothing about them and always bought Pny/Kingston/Sandisk and the sorts.

The SanDisk Extreme cards are probably the best performance cards to buy, however they do come at a premium. I decided to go for 2 8GB Class 10 Transcend cards on my D3100 and they've been flawless. For £8 each you can't really go wrong!

(As mentioned above, 2 smaller cards are better than one big one!)
