Hi all,

I've a friend who has just returned from New York who managed to damage an SD card while over there. As they were putting it into the card reader they somehow broke the slider off that stops it being written .

His brother then decided to have a look at it and ripped it apart:

So, he's got about 10GB of photos from the holiday on there and was wondering if it can be

a) put back together so the photos can be rescued
b) have the lock repaired so he can use it for again

Any advice? (other than bin it)

I am thinking some duct tape and it can at least be read from, I am just not too sure about the reusing it :(

You can replace that memory card for less than £5. The concern should be getting the data from the card and saving it elsewhere surely?

yeah as I said, I think it'll be easy enough to read from, it's more, can it be fixed?

I like a challenge and just wondering if it can be done or if it's a complete waste of time :S

considering the cost of a replacement 16GB SD card, i would consider it a waste of time. once you have everyting off it, just bin it

Is the actual data chip still there?
I can't see it in the picture, unless it's on the underside of the part with the label, as from that shot it looks like you've got the contact pcb and the casing.

It may be possible to put it back together to get the data off it, but after that the bin is the best place.

As said, I wouldn't bother faffing about fixing it when it is worth a couple of quid and might risk future problems. Just try and get the data read and throw it in the bin.

You can get 64gb cards for a tenner these days!

Cant you just stick something thin to the chip piece so that you can place it easily in a reader and get it out again just so you can get the data off it?

Sorted and took less than 5 mins.

stuck the 3 pieces back together with some medical tape i had next to the PC, it read fine. Quick youtube search and placed a piece of medical tape over the lock area in the unlocked position. Then I had to go all the way downstairs for sellotape :o

Popped that over it, reads and writes as normal :D

Anyway, retrieved data, told friend it needs binning and he's said fine :)

thanks all :)
