SD cards won't mount - 2011 MBP

Tried a couple of different SD cards, one of which has previously mounted successfully. I've also tried a couple of suggestions off the net which were to blow hard into the slot, and to try rebooting with the SD card in. I did read that running VM software can interfere (I have VirtualBox installed) but the solution in that case wasn't obvious.

Does anyone have other suggestions? If not what are my options here? Is this the sort of thing Apple can fix in a store?

The SD card slot is temperamental on my 2009 iMac. And my 2010 MBP. And on pretty much every Apple product that has an SD card slot if internet forums are anything to go by. Try an SMC or PRAM reset.

Thanks. As it happens the problem resolved itself somehow tonight. I should state that the reason I was playing around with SD cards was that I have a new sat nav unit. Tonight I installed TomTom Home, then inserted the SD card and it just worked. Who knows where this leaves me with my camera SD card but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
