Hi chaps,

Got this a couple of days ago. Very impressed as I'm not used to smartphones but have a couple of questions.

Firstly it came pre loaded with a ton of crap from orange. There are about 60 apps on there that I can't get rid of, considering it's a small phone and can only display 9 apps per screen it's annoying to keep scrolling across when looking for stuff, I'd like to delete most of the stuff thats on there.

Secondly I'm a little worried about data use. I've turned off data, I'm not on my new contract yet, gotta wait a month, so I just stuck my old sim in. I'm sure it's not 3G, sims probably 5 years old so I'm guessing it won't have 3G capability? But if it was it would probably cost as soon as I started using it.

Does the default navigation app use 3G to download maps? That's all I would be using 3G for whilst out and about, if it doesn't that would be great cos I can then sell my tomtom and use this, it's great:) If it does use data then is it worth paying for a satnav app that keeps the maps on the device? In which case what is a good/cheap app?

Sorry if these are nooby questions:D I don't have any experience with smartphones.

Finally, how can I get the best out this phone? Any tips and tricks?

To remove the apps you must de-brand and root the phone there are tutorials on both xperia x10.net and XDA-Developers. This is worth a read for improving battery life and also tells you how to turn 3G off so that the phone is only in GSM mode. I am not sure on whether navigation uses 3G or not sorry.

Make sure you disable delivery reports in Settings > Sony Ericsson > Messaging > Delivery Reports. As you get charged for these and it is on as standard!

One of the best widgets is the Power widget allows you to enable/disable features without going through settings.

Edit: Is yours lime green?

can you not move the shortcuts for apps around ? eg move the ones you use to the front of the list of them ? meaning you wont have to scroll through ?

theres plenty of apps that will stop you using 3g on the market (i have used APN droid) you can also just go into the 3g settings and edit them something useless

to get the best from it i would consider debranding to a generic Uk firmware and then updating it to the latest available SE firmware. that will remove all the orange crap and also you may see some speed/battery improvements. you will not lose your SE warranty by doing this. should be instructions in the XPERIA thread

You get charged for delivery reports?! How... Is that the little tick that appears in the corner of messages? Never knew that...

That reminded me of another thing... I'm not sure I like the messages being displayed as conversations. Do people use a traditional inbox on these kinds of phones or should I just get used to it? Are there any apps that work in the old way?

Don't know about the debranding etc stuff... I'm currently using the basic android OS, will I lose things like the quick links in the corners that sony put on?

Cheers ichabod

edit:

Andy: I have reorganised the apps but if I download any new ones they go to the end of the list, 7 pages away. Bit annoying:) I'll think about sorting out the firmware, need to do some reading I think:) thanks

Yes the little tick is the report and they work out a penny a tick

You can download apps for SMS I am sure there are ones that work like on old phones but i really like the conversation style just makes follow a series of texts easier!

De-branding and rooting does not change the OS it just allows you to remove unwanted apps it will not have an effect on the quick access corners.

If you use MSN you can add me if you like.

This is probably the best thing to do! And then if you want you can root the phone and remove some of the useless SE apps/games

Thanks Ichabod, don't worry I won't pester you any more:D I can normally work these things out just gotta spend some time reading rather than playing with the phone!

the generic uk firmware is basically what comes on the phone if you buy it sim and network free. so its the firmware before orange/vodafone/whoever's technicians add a load of crap (apps/links/bookmarks/etc) the OS and layout will be the same

you also usually get firmware updates first when your on generic

Well I debranded it. The keypad seems a lot more responsive which is worth it, and most of the tat has gone although sony still put on 4 pages of stuff!

However....! I've lost my Navigation app. It was just called 'navigation' and the icon was a blue arrow pointing up. It was free and seemed to work really well, nothing to do with the subscriber only orange navigation, but it's disappeared anyway.

Does anyone know where I can get it?! Can't seem to find it on the marketplace.

If not, what's the cheapest half decent navigation app you can get:D?

Thanks guys

Hehe I might get a bit click happy;) There's still some useless junk though like some games that are trials and a satnav i have to buy. grr! Thanks for all your help though, this is much better.

Did you update the phone after you de-branded it? the lastest firmware is 1.1.A.0.8. There is still a lot of crap put on by google and SE that you can take off by rooting, I found the one click method did not work as well as the long winded exploid method. There were some apps that I couldn't remove with the one click method that I can with the exploid.

Safe list of apps to remove;
- Facebook.apk
- Wisepilot.apk
- user-support.apk
- EManual.apk
- roadsync.apk
- edge.apk
- rollercoaster.apk
- Talk.apk (Google Talk)
- Gmail.apk
- peggle.apk
- TrackId.apk
- YouTube.apk
- Notes.apk
- Timer.apk
- Calendar.apk
- Stopwatch.apk
- Calculator.apk
- NeoReader.apk
- DigitalClockWidget.apk
- Browser.apk
- Alarm.apk

Obviously if you use some of these don't remove them :p
