Not sure if everybody else has already heard about this, but I hadn't... There's now a new firmware update out for the Seagate Momentus XT that stops some of the spin-downs and freezes etc. associated with the earlier firmware.

I just updated mine using these instructions: http://www.io101.org/blog/howto/update-seagate-momentus-xt-firmware-sd24-sd25-on-macbook-pro/

Everything seems absolutely fine and I'll be interested to see if it does result in me getting better battery life. I think the hard drive maybe sounds quieter too, but that might just be in my head!

I'll report back with any issues etc.

Haha, it's about time. Thought it'd never receive a firmware update, had it for a year or so now. I'll report back if I notice any differences.

The only downside is you need to make a bootable CD as they've only released the upgrade as either an ISO or .exe

Definitely smoother for me, and not stuttering with video playback any more. Two thumbs up so far.

Can't say I had any stuttering problems before hand, but I did have the occasional spindowns which would freeze the system for a few seconds till it span back up again.

I'll have to just wait and see if that has been solved!

Updated mine today. Haven't really noticed anything major, if at all, so far.

If you have a Windows partition running in Boot Camp like I do, then the .exe method is by far the easiest.
