Ive just bought day of defeat source for my dads birthday and its not sealed. I know he brought the dvd out after I found the case but I wasnt sure if the serial number was on the paperwork or not.

Should I go back and ask for one sealed?

If it was from a retail store then it shuold be fine. Thats usually how they store their games and since most don't let you trade in/return PC games anymore its unlikely they key would have been used.

thanks, it was from a retail store, i just dont want him to enter the key then it not work.

if the box had the serial stuck to the inside of it and it was left on the shelf theres a good chance someone may have gone in and got the key and registered it this has happened with a few peoples HL2

A few shops do this and it seems a bit daft to say the least. Store the disc and paperwork safely in a drawer and put the one thing you need to actually install and use the game online on the shelf for all to see

i think it depends on the shop. some seal all their games and you can pick up a sealed copy from the masses on the shelf (HMV as far as i can remember - i buy online these days) but others are like video shops, you pick up the case from the shelf and take it to the checkout where they give you the good stuff at the till, or sometimes a sealed copy.

if it was scenario 1 i would make sure it was sealed when i bought it, scenario 2 it wouldn't matter imho.

inside the case is just the disk and a piece of paper with the key printed on the back. not sure whether the case was on the shelf with the piece of paper or not but the disk definately came out the back store room

Id be careful I know people in Brecon who take advantage of the fact that WHSmith leave keys in their boxes for games such as Guild Wars and have had them "removed illegally". They keep trying to defend taking them, but it happens because some people are just jerktits.

this happened with me with a new half life 1, arrive unsealed tried cd key and it was in use, rang the company they delivered a new game and this one was sealed and cd key worked. when i buy a game i always want it sealed so i know that i am the first owner and everythings going to work

I always buy my games from online stores, dont have to worry about cd keys being nicked. Only problem i had was HF2 came with no cd key sticker at all  but think that was down to publisher as it was sealled.
