im really new at this stuff so go easy :)

Ive submitted a site to google and i was jus wondering how can u dictate what google shows in its listings when you search for the site (when it does eventually get to the top of the listings).

many of the companies i search for, directly under the underlined link show under the name of the site or company a brief description of the nature of the business or quite often the name, address and phone numbers etc.

so how do i go about doing this?

thanks

you need to add meta description to each page to say you want that used, if you don't put anything google will most likely use the first paragraph.

putting meta description doesn't mean that's what users will see as google and others will chose to use a piece of text from the page relating to what the user searched, e.g. you may put the meta description about your company saying about how good and professional you're, but if i search your company name and the words established since, it might pick the last paragraph explaining how long you been established.
