I'm not sure where to post this so thought that here would be ok.

I must have picked up a nasty from somewhere but Norton is not picking owt up and neither XoftSpySE so don't know how to fix this; any Ideas will be gratefully received.

Running XP Pro with service pack 3 and using IE7.

I search with Google and get the results but none of the results has "cached" link at the end, just a "similar pages" ....... when I click a link I get redirected to various other search engines etc.

If I enter the URL in the address bar, it's ok but if I just click the link I jump to a different page.

Most annoying is that I don't want to have to reinstall windows but I don't know how to cure this: your assistance would be appreciated.

disable system restore

remove norton & that other thing
install..

ccleaner slim
nod32 trial
spybot s&d
adaware
avg antispyware (remove after)
firefox with adblock plus, and Easy List subscription

The computer in my gfs house has the same thing. Her brother was visiting dodgy sites and suddenly it got overwhelmed with all kinds of nastys. I'm just gonna reinstall XP next time I'm out there. Easier and probably less time consuming then going to all the effort of trying to fix it only to have it come back.

I have paid good money for both Norton and XsoftSpySE and up until this problem, have always been ok so I'll probably keep 'em and try reinstall of IE7 first and then XP if it doesn't cure it.

Thanks for looking though.

I have paid good money for both Norton and XsoftSpySE and...

...and yet you're sitting in front of a borked install thanks to nasties getting past both of them :o Do as the man says, tbh.

NOD32 (Avast if you don't want to pay for another AV)
Ccleaner (free)
SuperAntiSpyware (free - you don't need the real-time paid-for version)

Those should sort you out no problems at all. +1 for installing Firefox 3 with Adblock Plus (mine has Easylist, some tracker filters and a rickroll blocklist lol) and NoScript. No more nasties :D

Edit: You can also do an online scan for free using NOD32 at Eset's website if you go for Avast but want the awesomeness that is NOD32 to clean your system first ;)
