Just a quick one, is there a search button so I can search for pictures/video etc on a selected hard drive. Like the one in XP ;)

But thats if you know the file name I just want osx to find all music files on a external hard drive.

Is it possible to set up similar just for your extarnal drive?

I've got a external HD which I want to wipe for time machine back up but before I do I want to get all my music and films off it but they are all over the drive and cant seem to set spotlight to look on that drive for the files types

Type the filetype in to the spotlight textbox.

E.g. Searching for .m4a (iTunes AAC audio files)

yeh but that will search all my drives and show 1000's of files. How do I choose the search location e.g F: drive.

See where it's highlighted "This Mac" in my screenshot? That's what it's searching..

Click on a drive / folder on the left etc that you wish to search, and type "m4a" in to the mini spotlight text bar and it'll filter the results for that drive/folder.

E.g. Click on the External HD icon on the left, then type "AVI" to find all the AVI files. You can also click the + icon under the spotlight text bar to add criteria such as "Video" to broaden the search :)
