searching documents

this may be a bit of a stupid question but, XP has a pretty poor search function and takes hours to find a document using it. Is there any seperate software that works better?

or say for example i had a mapped hdd with thousands of docs on it. Whats the best way of being able to search for documents on that hdd? or is windows search the only option?

Windows Search 4.0? (You'll find it in Windows Update)
