Woke up at 6am to drive down to this beach with a nice rocky shore and be there before sunrise. Conclusion number one is I need better graduated filters.

C&C welcome.

Very nice composition on the first one; great capture of the skies and the orange glow, that's a good photo, but on the second it's still nice but not as good, i feel like the foreground is too dark to be an interesting focal point.

Well worth the sacrifice of waking up early though :p

Completely agree with this post, took the words out my mouth :)

What strength filter did you use? I know little about ND grads atm (although I want to buy some), but perhaps you need something a bit stronger to darken the sky more in relation to the ground?

Both nice shots, though the sky in no.1 is really nice :)

Thanks for the comments.

I have a 2 stop tiffen filter. Its just not enough when the sun is just out. My only quarrel with it is not the strength but also that its a screw-on filter, ie the horizon on it is always in the middle of the frame. I want square filters + holder so that I can slide the filter up and down as needed.

They look stunning, i quite like the dark foreground in them. I think i might buy me some ND Grad filters as it looks like you can get some really nice results.
