i recently bought a Seasonic M12ii 750watt psu after many people on here recommending Seasonic PSUs, and upon powering it up i was very disappointed with the pretty audible wooosh from the fan..

I fully expected such i high quality, high wattage psu to have a silent idle or idle shutdown...

anyways i am looking for an alternative to it, for around the same or less (£100) Ideally modular and as compact as possible as its going into Prodigy case and space is TIGHT!

Obviously the idle noise levels are a big priority as well..

needs to power an overclocked 4770K and 7970 with custom watercooling.

cheers for any ideas anyone might have!

Andy.

Seasonic do a fanless range but their pricy £100 for 400w PSU.

You could always go for one where the fans don't start spinning until your PC reaches a certain load threshold like the Corsair GS600 or the Seasonic X-650W.

Fan might be faulty, almost every review i've seen for a seasonic say they're great and run quiet, my new 650w one has a switch for some mode that turns the fan off if its not being stressed.
It's the Seasonic X-650 mentioned above.

after having a look around the higher end Seasonics, and which ones have the Hybid fan thing.. and that i cant get the Seasonic-X 750, its looking like i am going to go all out and get the Platinum one... 760watter... its £150 but its pretty much the best psu out there it seems!

i wish i read this thread earlier i just received the same psu but 850w version & the noise is awful. reviews are liars or seasonic send them better psu's to review. will send it back but not sure what to get now !!

is it silent ? to be honest the seasonic was perfect, great flat cables, nice size but horribly noisy. i bought it to replace my xfx which is 3 year old because i wanted really silent psu for my new prodigy m case but i got noisier one which was claimed to be one of the most silent psu's on the market according to the reviews on the net !!

by the way how do i start RMA ? i can't find the option in my account or in the order page !!?

The ocuk support page is here - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/supportdetails.php#opt3

The EVGA has semi fanless mode so it should only spin up at a certain load.

thanks i'm currently looking at some psu's & will check the evga. thanks for the link & as for jonnyguru i will never trust his reviews again he said this psu was silent, its like a mini hair dryer.

I have seen a few people complaining about the Evo fan noise. I am a bit surprised, as Seasonic psu's are usually top notch. Also it uses the same make of fan (ADDA) as the G series psu, and that model is pretty quiet.

bit of a thread revival going on i see...

I found out the M12 is actually made by a different company and just branded Seasonic.. pretty shocking tbh

i went for a Seasonic X-750 in the end.. expensive unit but a very high spec one.. it went into a mates pc so i cant remember 100% but i am pretty sure its almost totally silent

and has a very solid sounding relay that clicks when powering up

i have opened a thread in CS to return the psu. i thought my xfx pro which is also made by seasonic was bad until i heard the M12 & as Memphis Raines said it's not even made by seasonic !!!!!!

Keep in mind that the EVGA PSU is 180mm long, which might cause issues with your case, depending on the length of your GPU:

Q: Will the XYZ Power Supply or ZYX Video Card fit inside the Prodigy M?
Video cards at 9.5inches or less will have 200mm of power supply clearance
Video cards at 11 inches or less will have 160mm of power supply clearance
Video cards at over 11 inches will have 150mm of power supply clearance.

Also you might want to consider the SuperFlower Leadex GOLD range if the length of the PSU isn't an issue: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=123&subid=2057

EVGA G2 PSU's are basically rebranded SuperFlower Leadex GOLD PSU's with a cheaper (noisier) fan.

thanks sicount, yes i noticed the evga is far too long just from looking at the picture, prodigy m case max psu length is 160mm,i will just keep using my xfx psu it still has 2 full years of warranty remaining & sounds half as bad as this seasonic.thanks a lot for the recommendations. :)

Good point on the psu length. I didn't notice the prodigy case in your earlier post :o

As for the Seasonic psu being made by someone else, do you have a source ? I am pretty certain that Seasonic make all their psu's.

I own 2 x Seasonic X650 and Seasonic X1050, all dead silent on my computers, don't even think the fans spin. All PSU's are well over double watt needed for computer however.

My first Seasonic X650 was purchased in 2009, it's already outlived one build.

i don't think i can return the psu now, they said there is a new rule since june 13th they will deduct 20% of the price paid if returned item is open/used,this means £18 in my case add to that the postage cost & we're taking nearly £28 loss which is not really worth it.

oh well next time i will ask users opinion instead of reading & relying on reviews .google search shows i'm not the only one who's not happy about the noise level from this psu.
