Hi all

I have been replacing my power cables with new 90degree versions and would like to know what is the best fuse to use on PSU as these new 90-degree cables come with 10amp fuses (c2g 2 metre 18 AWG 90-degree power cable 10 amp).

The power cables that came with seasonic seem to be all fitted with 13amp fuses which i found strange as i thought 13-amp fuses where only used on heaters or kettles or anything with an element,

I use seasonic psu ranging from 600w to 850w and would like to know if its ok to use 10amp fuse that came with the new cable or should i replace it for a lower rating to be safe or do i need another new cable with 13 amps fuse and for these PSUs.

I am not to sure if psu manufactures just supply standard cables fitted with standard 13amps which would not help your computer if the 13amp fuse does not blow in time. I never would have thought PC power supplies would need 13-amp fuses. I have checked all my seasonic psu and they all fitted with 13 amps.

noticed a Xbox one x is fitted with a 10-amp fuse from Microsoft.

thanks for any help or info as i am just making sure it's safe to use.

It seems to me that it's rare for any manufacturer to put anything other than a 13A fuse in a plug nowadays (irresepctive of what it's connected to). So the new power leads you have coming with 10A fuses is a refreshing change.

A 10A fuse in the plug makes sense, as the C13 on the end is only rated to 10A.

As 850W is only around 3.5A or so you could put a 5A fuse in if you wanted. But the PSUs own builtin protection ought to kick in before even that would blow so it isn't necessary.

The fuse is only there to stop the cable from melting, not to protect the PSU. One would hope that all cables come fitted with the correct size fuse for that, so it should never be necessary to change them. Then, if the fuse was too small for the PSU, you would need a whole new cable.

Thanks for the help. I got in contact with seasonic and they advised to use a 10amp as they say

Thank you for your reply.

It's not a rule per se but what we are using as it allow to handle inrush current when you start your computer and avoid any issue with the fuse if it's a too small one (like 5A for example). So we would recommend to stick to minimum 10A

Here is a handy tip.

Many of the fuses sold on eBay, or even the local pound shop are fake (non standard) fuses. One of the things they do it not to put sand in the fuse. One way to check, is smash open a fuse from a packet and check what's inside of it.

So you could run the risk of swapping out your correctly made 13 amp fuse, and replace with dodgy Chinese 10amp fuse.
