Seasonic or XFX

Seasonic's own brand psu's are not worth the price premium. Seasonic makes several psu's for other manufacturers including all XFX units and most are based on their own models yet can be substantially cheaper. The Silverstone Nightjar 520w platinum is basically the same unit as the Seasonic yet is much cheaper. The XFX you mention is also based on the same Seasonic unit.

Did you know that there are a lot of psu's these days that have a hybrid fan mode where the fan doesn't even turn on until the unit reaches a certain load or temperature? The EVGA Supernova GS series feature this hybrid fan mode and are Seasonic built units. The EVGA Supernova G2 series (up to and including the 850w) also has this feature. These are Superflower built units and based on the Leadex Gold platform but with a warranty of up to 10 years.

While I'm judging them a bit on their past and they might be better these days I'd go EVGA or Superflower long long before I'd buy XFX (or personally I pay the premium for Seasonic but that is another story).

Not worth the extra cost, as already highlighted most decent PSUs have a hybrid fan mode anyway so noise shouldn't be an issue.

So I'd go with EVGA GS, G2 or XFX

The fanless market was more limited a few years ago so I went with the Seasonic. It's been running 24/7 for over 2 years in a custom NAS/media centre on its side and stuffed under a bed (but with 2 intake fans over the HDD's at 5v and no exhaust).

I'd probably go hybrid if the PC is going to be used at load for periods of time to make sure it is properly cooled if required.

I noticed this when I bought my, EVGA G2. I left it normal so I know the fan is always on, because if it's not I won't know about it. But I wonder if I should put it in Eco mode.

I have a superflower 750w platinum now, and in hybrid/Eco the fan doesn't even switch on. In normal mode it could be quieter but I don't use that so no problem :p
