As title says, is the X 650 a good bet for a new Skylake build?

I like the idea of the semi-passive mode and the reviews seem to be good?

Also seems to be Haswell ready etc regarding power states.

Please no suggestions for EVGA's Seasonic units.

It's fine but is very overpriced. Why no interest in the excellent EVGA units built by Seasonic. They have the same features as the X650. What about the EVGA G2 units built by Superflower and based on their own Leadex Gold platform? The G2 650w also has hybrid fan control (as does all the range up to but not inculding the 1000w version) and a 7 year warranty and is £30 cheaper. It's out of stock here but other places have it in stock. You could even have a 650w platinum unit from EVGA or Superflower (essentially both are the same psu) for £11 and £12 less than the gold rated Seasonic. EVGA has a Uk rma center now should anything go wrong.

See my thread here regarding over temperature protection.

I contacted EVGA (28th Dec.) to see if they could confirm/deny but I have yet to receive a response.

So I'd rather play it safe and buy something which definitely has OTP.

I think you are worrying way too much about that and throwing money down the drain. It's your choice but you are ruling out many excellent units that are much cheaper. Reviewers don't seem to worry about it. Have you tried contacting our EVGA forum rep to see what he has to say?

Sorry for off-topic but... every time I see your location, I feel like cracking open a bottle :D

The distillery is just down the road from us. When the wind is in the right direction it smells lovely. We are surrounded by a great many more as well. :D

TBH if you're reaching an overtemp situation, it's going to be caused by either an over-current or over-voltage situation unless you're in a room filled with radiators/heat sources. In a normal situation, a PSU shouldn't/won't overheat unless you have defective components, in which case RMA it. In either case, the protection circuits should kick in for both of those if they're out of spec. Unless of course it's CiT junk in which case BOOM...

The X650 is a good unit, but unless you're running a server 24/7 why worry about over-temp protection above all else?

I've run my X650/750 (Cant remember which it is) for about 4 maybe more years now, its currently powering an 8350 @ 5GHZ and a mildly OC'd 290X so quite a power hungry setup and I don't think the cooling fan ever kicks in on it

Next PSU will be a Seasonic too I reckon, its been 100% reliable

While it would be interesting to see a response from EVGA on the matter - I'm fairly sure those EVGA units based on Seasonic internals have OTP as a fundamental part of the design.

Yeah there are several reviews that mention the apparent lack of OTP on those models but the Seasonic design they are based on has it as a fundamental part of the spec - hence why it would be interesting to get a response from EVGA.
