Hi!

Just recently got a new mountain bike, nothing special, just one from decathlon. Mainly use it to get to and from Uni but wanted to eventually start biking outside of the city off road like I used to. A long way to go for that as I am a fat bugger.

Now, I have found my self walking up the hills due to the fact that my seat is so damned uncomfortable. I don't mind getting a sweat on at all, but my ass is in pain....

Can anyone recommend a seat at all that is moderately comfortable to sit on for a man of my size? I already have a cheap "gel" cover for it, but that isn't helping much at all... :(

Thanks!

A lot of proper bike shops are set up to find a seat that suits you. Usually by measuring your sit bones and using that as a starting point (or you could do that yourself I guess!). If they're a decent shop they'll also have saddles you can loan to try for a couple of rides before spending cash.

Fat or thin, your sit bones are in the same place, so a regular saddle will be fine. If your current one is uncomfortable, grab a different one - but saddles aren't suited to any particular weight/size - just particular sit-bone widths.

Gel covers will actually accentuate saddle discomfort, as the gel is pushed into places away from your sit bones, where normally there wouldn't be as much contact, meaning that those places will be more sore than they would normally be.

Unfortunately saddles are a very personal thing, so no-one can tell you which saddle you'll like - you'll just have to try some! However, the Charge Spoon is fairly cheap and well reviewed, so I'd give that a go. I'm personally not a huge fan of them though they do the job for shorter rides.
