Last year I picked up a Mazda3 1.6 for my sister who does 20kish a year or so. The theory being that it was great value (They are very cheap), was Japanese, and despite being frankly a pretty awful car, would just.... work.

It has emerged from it's MOT with a bill of almost £600 for new shocks on the front and, bizarrely, the sump was completely rusted through. On a 2005 car. Brilliant.

So given its only point in existence was to provide reliable hassle free motoring and it's failed to do this, I'm tempted to move it on and sort her out with...

.... a diesel.

The reason the Mazda3 was purchased is because buying a car last time went against every rule in my book. Her previous car expired, she needed to get to work, so I had to find a car PDQ and had no time to excercise my usual patience in finding something great.

This time I have all the time in the world so I'm tempted to do it properly.

With a budget of between £2k and £3k and with the following criteria:

a) Must be as reliable as is reasonably possible from a £2-3k car
b) Must be economical on a 60 mile a day dual carriageway commute (the Mazda3 manages 25mpg on this. I've never got to the bottom of whether it's simply broken, crap or she droves with lead feet, but hey).
c) Must be at least a bit 'nice'. Can't feel like a downgrade from her 05 Mazda3. Seeing a few Todeloo's with cream leather, climate control, etc.
d) No 17 or 18 inch wheels. Must be able to put 4 decent tyres on it without spending £500.

Seat Todeloo's with the horrible, nasty, noisy and gutless 110 TDI engine appear to fit the bill.

Do they?

I'd be buying a Mondeo TDCi if they didn't have a tendancy to lunch DMF's and drop big bills.

Corolla diesel for under £3k? Focus Mk1 is just too far gone these days as well, so wouldn't want one of those. It looks and feels like its straight out of the 90's.

Early high milers are 3k, so I guess you would be pushing it, as you have all the time in the world you may be able to get one.

They never go wrong.

Pretty much has to be a diesel. Don't really care how crap the engine is.

The important thing is that if I'm going to 'sell' this as an idea it needs to feel like it isnt a step backwards from the Mazda3. I'm thinking something like a nice spec Seat, maybe a VW Bora (Golf's are crap value) might acheive that.

I really want a Mondeo but it's too much of a liability. Passats all seem to have 150k miles under £3k despite looking quite respectable.

Residual value is irrelevent, but reliability is of huge concern. Civic is an interesting suggestion - are they typical at this money or is that an outlyer?

The good thing is I've got months in which to acheive this if needs be. It's an idea at the moment. A sideways step into something that's as nice or nicer yet halves the fuel bill and is reliable.

Out of Japanese manufacturers, aren't Honda and Nissan the daddy of true reliability? I always hear problems with Toyota and Mazda!

Only issue with VWs is it depends where you get it serviced/maintained, my Passat threw up a couple of bills, being a noob I didnt expect, inc. standard cambelt change at 40k etc, at servicing there was always something extra and so on, seemed expensive for an 7 year old car, even at independants. My dad's Focus at 5 years old and similar mileage hasnt thrown any humdingers yet. I know it looks old, but Focus' are pretty reliable from what I see! Maybe you got a one off in that Mazda? If you don't have a good specialist near you then I'd take that into consideration, VW are the definition of Main Stealer!

Just flicking through autotrader, very few diesels but yes they are all around that price.

Plenty of 1.6l petrols though

Theres a few Boras about but all big miles.

Not labouring the point but why a diesel? Shes going to get 40 to the gallon out of a petrol on that communte surely?

Its going to be a much easier sell putting her in a peppy ish petrol something or other.

I thought that as well but thats not what happens. It is monumentally crap on fuel. Whether this is the car or her driving I've no idea but it is revving its guts out at 70mph. It's a town-car really. It really is hilariously bad, I did pretty much the same commute myself for a year back in 2006/07 and was averaging 29-30ish in the 530i!

I cant see it being her driving unless shes leaving it in 4th.

They must just be ropey on fuel.

Only reason i say is as you know you are going to find a nice petrol easier than a 3k diesel that it seems the whole world wants to buy.

I bought a 2009 golf diesel auto yesterday and a 2005 mitsubishi lancer by the way :)

Does your sister get any say in this decision? :p

Looks like you might be leaping into the unknown then, i like that, he who dares wins, who said you erred on the side of caution be silent!

Toledo owners report very few problems and are nearly unanimous in their praise for its reliability - check for yourself by visiting the owners' reviews section of the website. The interior is superbly screwed together and the diesel engines are strong enough for ultra-high mileages.

Car check problem points

Body: No problems reported.

Engine/Gearbox: Sump needs to be replaced if the car is running too low.

Other: No problems reported.
