Second 980ti or 1080

hi there guys,

I wonder what might be the best option for me. I am currently playing at 4k, and my 980ti does struggle a bit (im having to drop settings to get the 40fps mark). I am thinking of either picking up a second 980ti (my current one is reference design) or looking moving onto the 1080 bandwagon.

I guess a single 1080 will struggle also to reach 60fps in 4k.. so I guess I would be looking at SLI either way. I currently have a Seasonic 760w, which I think is enough for 1080 in SLI, just not 980ti SLI. If I do have to change psu then I would stick with seasonic (ill probably op for the 1200w - so never be caught with slightly less power than I need). Hopefully in the next couple of weeks the prices might change.

With a 980ti SLI, the 6gb vram worries me a little - we are already seeing lots of vram being used in 4k... the extra 2gb might be useful. In the past I had to upgrade cards because there wasnt enough vram, not because of their lack of performance.

Another option would be 1070's but I figure these will offer very similar performance of my current 980ti. I guess which-ever way I look at it, I im gonna need two cards for 4k. The 1080ti/new titan would be the way I would have gone but we thinking thats not due to end of the year? and heck, what price is that gonna be? although I bet it would have lots of vram.

thanks for guys for reading, and all advice is welcomed.

Due to the possible cost of having to replace your PSU for 980ti SLI I would wait and see what the 1070s have to offer as they have the extra 2GB and will probably get more favorable driver updates.

I had two 980ti's, one of which I've sold, in more modern engines the SLI experience was excellent, Overwatch in particular, only games like ARMA3 that are hampered by their engine were running at less than 60fps. I'm downgrading to a single 1080 because I'm using my Vive a lot and SLI doesn't help there.

I guess you think the 1070 are going to be around the same performance as a 980ti? I did see something on videocardz site but im kind-of skeptical to be honest. The 1080 seems to be around 15-35% faster than a non-oc 980ti. The 1070 is lower clocked 1080 with less cuda cores, and my card is a factory over-clocked. maybe the 1070 might knock down the price of a 980ti? however the 2gb of vram is important.. hmmm.. the 1070 memory bandwidth isnt looking that great.

the SLI experience was excellent,
Glad to hear, as I do tend to read a few bad comments about SLI. I think people are Over-exaggerate things. Didnt SLI improve a bit on maxwell?

thanks,

My experience with SLI has been great overall, but in your situation I'd wait for the 1080Ti. The 1080 isn't impressive enough to warrant an upgrade - as you implied, you can make up most of the difference with an overclock. If you want to SLI, do it day one and experience unmatched performance for as long as possible. Unless, of course, you can get the second card for a really good price.

FWIW: 6GB is plenty for 99% of 4K gaming right now. From memory, the only game I've had VRAM issues with in the past year is Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

Well we not sure when that's due? I was thinking it more next year. That's a lot of waiting. If it was due soon, then I would defiantly agree and would be looking at the Ti. For 4k, im pretty much have no choice than look at SLI.

Doesnt Tomb-raider (Rise of) require more than 6gb? To be honest, I dont think the 1070 going to offer much over than a 980ti, apart from a little more memory. I guessing Polaris isnt really going change things for me either.

thanks guys
