Just found this on The Register.

The Register said:
Microsoft has begun seeking manufacturing partners to make an internal HD DVD drive for a redesigned Xbox 360 console, whistle-blowers from among Taiwan's optical disk drive production community have claimed. And the software giant may be looking at incorporating disc-burning technology in the console.
...
The sources suggest the second-generation Xbox 360 could ship during the first half of 2007.

I wish I had held off a bit longer now :(

They won't even let you play xvid/divx from media center, can't see them allowing you to burn discs.

Won't happen, it would increase the cost of the console two-fold.

Yep, and they already loose money on it. Even more so as they seem to be replacing/repairing the majority of them.

Maybe they are going to sell it as a third option as like Super Duper Premium 360 to directly compete with the PS3 with its intergrated bluetooth, so would probably sell for a similar price?

Sounds a bit like the PSX, except an Xbox 540 might actually sell quite well.

Not too sure on that one.

The 360 already has an MCE front end so you can already watch video/music/photos/whatever with very little hassle so that's one benefit the PSX had gone already. I think the PSX allowed you to edit video, but if you've got a PC with Windows you're already likely to have Windows Movie Maker so I can't see many people rushing out to buy something like that as the 360 does practically everything you could want from a console as it is!

I can certainly see Microsoft releasing a console with built in HD-DVD drive in the future, but no way with an RW drive.

But hey, this is The Register - I'd trust playground rumours more than those guys.

The problem with stories like that is that they are essentially true, just that the conclusion The Reg comes to.

I am gonna guess they heard that MS was talking to partners about various things from minor cost reductions to the idea of doing an internal HD-DVD version. Of course they are thinking about it, they need to plan it now so if it works, they are ready. But El Reg jumped the gun, put 2 and 2 together and got 22. Thats the reg.

My guess is that Microsoft will release a third sku at some point with a built in HD-DVD when they become much more affordable. I can't see this happening till at least the end of next year though.

All games will continue to be released on DVD9 and there won't be anything this version can do that even a Core + add ons couldn't.

If HD-DVD really takes off which seems to be a bit touch and go although their announcement of triple layer disks with 1 layer dedicated to the DVD version (so effectively meaning 1 disk for both formats) if pushed the right way could swing the balance. Rental companies just love the idea of just stocking the 1 version and avoiding all consumer confusion) then I can really see them offering a version that doesn't need 'a peripheral' as it'll sell easier to AV buffs. Hell, I'd probably get one (if I don't have the add-on) and keep my Core as a DVD / Spare.

They will not drop the Core as they see it as there main way of penetrating less developed markets (like India and China) and they say that having sub £199 and eventually $199 entry is the way forward.

Peter moore stated a while back that the hd dvd would be addon only and they would not be releasing a 360 with an internal hd-dvd drive.

MS said a lot of things like that tho.

I can;t see it happening it would put it in direct competition with the PS3 when the PS3 launches in Europe.
In a straight fight, toe to toe at those prices, the PS3 would destroy the 360.
And before i get 'how would it destroy blah blah blah' i reffer everyone to PS2's sold Vs xbox's sold.
So MS wont do anything to push the price up as high as that, the one factor the 360 has in its favour is its really cheap price.

Taken from digitimes:

Microsoft has started designing a new-generation of Xbox 360's equipped with an internal HD-DVD drive and is selecting manufacturers in Taiwan to build the drive, according to sources in Taiwan's optical disc drive (ODD) industry.

Microsoft will offer an external HD-DVD drive for its Xbox 360 at around the end of this year, in an attempt to compete with the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), which will have a built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD) drive, the sources indicated. The external HD-DVD drive, however, can only play back movies, the sources noted.

If the process of selecting partner makers and subsequent certification goes smoothly, Microsoft may launch the Xbox 360 equipped with the built-in HD-DVD drive in the first half of 2007 at the soonest, the sources noted.

Hmm can't see them going for it myself. As someone else said, it would push the cost a lot higher, and just confuse potential buyers.

Best thing to do is to keep it as a gaming machine, at a relatively low price, then offer the HD-DVD player as an add-on for people who want to try HD-DVD.

I think the Sony approach of forcing Blu-Ray down peoples' throats is definately the wrong one. If they hadn't of bothered with Blu-Ray then PS3 would already be on the shelves with a MUCH lower price tag. I can't help but feel that Sony has knackered up the PS3 good and proper purely for the sake of furthering Blu-Ray. :(

I could see the HD-DVD 360 happening.....They'll call it Media Centre Edition of some pap but no 360 with Burning Technology will see the light of day :o

All the news sites have picked up on this 'rumour'.

Doesn't make it credible just cos it's everywhere you know.
