second hand 4870x2 or new 5850?

The X2 is faster, the 5850 has more features, more modern, far lower power and will most likely last longer.

Bad time to buy currently though I think. There's been some hinting at the "5870X2" which could well change current 58XX prices.

I was in the same boat just before the 5850 came out.
Went for the 4870x2 and glad I did. Runs everything flawlessly :)
The 4870x2 is faster than a 5870, but the cards have other benefits as stated above, albiet, being 'more modern' isn't one of them ;) :p. It's up to you what your requirements are.

i read there might be £60 off the 58** if ATI bring out the 5870x2 ( 5970 ) or nvidia release there cards earlier

I doubt there will be a price drop this side of Xmas, as NV are delaying there latest and greatest.
I would say the 4870X2 we have one here its a monster and at the price of the 5850 a bargin

4870X2 - More powerful and will run dx9 games considerably better / possibly dx10.1 on vista though not totally sure about 10.1 but 'think' I might be right there.

5850 - Less power consumption, less heat output, less noise and also dx11. Overclocks much, much better.

Me personally, I would wait for a few weeks or so and then buy a 5850.

Edit : You could always go down the path of crossfiring 5770's. ;)
