want to create a second home network off the back of my Suberhub 3.0

mainly something that i can isolate certain devices at certain times(ruddy kids playing fortnite at 3am )

i'm guessing something like a ubuitqi AP would be be pretty much a plug and play option? or are there any suitable alternatives ideally no more than £150 would be great

When you say second network, do you mean a second wireless network or a new VLAN? If you wanted just a new wireless network then a Ubnt AP would do the job and you can set it to be disabled at certain times.

If you wanted to add a VLAN then you'll need more kit.

I would have thought you could set up per device (MAC address) rules on the existing gear to lock out the individual devices as needed?

I cheap and nasty (and manual) way would be to change the main Wi-Fi password and only give them the guest wifi one, then when you want to kick them off, sign in to the SH3 and turn off the guest Wifi.

This can be got round by resetting the SH3, but you'd spot this as none of your wifi devices would connect.

The other option is to put the SH3 in to modem mode and buy a new router that will have the functionality you want.

open to suggestions guys

dont mind buying some new kit or even going daft it i can learn from it as well.

dont certainly dont mind running cat5 round the house and wall mounting an access point or 2 round the house in the name of performance either.

keen to hear options here.

i'd quite like to improve wifi performance around the house,
i dont mind running cables
i want a secondary wifi network in the house (one for grown ups one for little *****) ideally with the ability to lock out adult content on one as well would be a bonus and time restrict
i want shiny new kit to play. :)

The UniFi APs are worth a look then.

They aren't going to content filter but will do the rest of what you're wanting.

You're really going to need to get them ceiling mounted in central locations to get the best out of them.

If you could stretch your budget I'd suggest you look at Google Wi-Fi or one of the other Mesh systems. If I understand them correctly you'd be able to have your two networks and content filtering.

Bearing in mind what you're prepared to do I think a Ubiquiti AP or two would be in order. as suggested That'll sort the timing of your kids devices connecting. Then if you want to tinker, while not a content blocking solution per se, a Raspberry Pi with a well tuned install of PiHole will keep a lot of bad content away and make the internet experience for everyone at home a bit more snappy and safe.
