Hey guys I'm after a second opion for a friend and for my peice of mind.

Basically he's after a focus (mk2) to replace his current 52 plate Hyundai accent MVi. Now he's been to see a 55 plate 1.6 tdci zetec today which has done 72,000 miles with fsh and is up for £5495. I can't help but think this is pretty expensive however he likes the fact the dealership have said they'll give him £1k for his car and will provide the focus with a full service, mot & 3 years warranty.

I get the feeling they've offered £400/500 too much for his car because the focus is over priced.

If anyone has a glasses guide and could give me a rough idea of the relevant prices that would be great!

Does sound a lot, I paid 2k less than that a week ago for a 2004 zetec. Black one. Spot on condition. Ok mines mk1.5 apparently & not diesel etc but even so. My mileage is 69k, full service history, years ticket, ok only 3 months warranty, so to me 2k more sounds a lot I guess. Is an extra MK & the warranty worth 2k? maybe it is...

Sorry, but you cannot really hope to compare a MK1 Focus to a MK2 Focus on the best of days. One is still available to this very day as a new car (albeit it due to be replaced soon) and the other is a design from 1997 and almost indistinguishable from a £900 banger.

Anyway.

As for the Glass valuation, the kind people of vaxhuall will provide you with one here:

If memory serves they only give you trade values so you'll need to adjust the figures they give you accordingly.

Is the dealer a 'reputable' one? I ask as it might not be worth banking on the 3 year warranty as too often with dealers they tend to be not worth the paper they are printed on.

As a guide I paid 6k (6.4k including the stupid 3 year warranty my gf made me buy) for a 2005 Focus Zetec Climate 1.6 Ti-VCT with 30,000 miles and full dealer service history from Dagenham Motors last May. Had also been serviced and MOT's by the dealer just before we bought it.

It's nothing personal, but Ford were incredibility lazy went it came to the Face-lift of the MK1. De-Tangoed indicator lenses, how radical :(.

I dont know about de tangoed lights, as I have not been interested in Focus cars before tbh. But I think the MK 1.5 looks better overall than the newest one personally. But I like the more sporty look, if that's what it is, to the family car look. Even though mine is 4 door, I prefer the 2 door, but kids n that..

Thanks for the replies guy's I've told him the warrenty is only as good as the things it covers etc, I've got to admit if it were my money and I wanted a focus I don't think I'd be buying that one (it smells of smoke but apparently this doesn't bother him?!?!?!)

He appears to have a phobia of buying privately and only wants to buy from a garage so I've made sure at least he's looked at cars with fsh and told him to buy on condition. To be fair this one is pretty mint on the outside.

Yeah properly lazy with the introduction of a completely new engine when it was facelifted. Since when have facelifts been radical anyway?

I don't know whether diesels cost that much more than petrol, but back in October we paid £6.5k for a 56 plate petrol Focus 1.6 Zetec with 21k on the clock, and I still suspect we may have been robbed, so £5.5k for that seems very high.
