I have 6610i on orange contract, I wasn't to use a P/G sim in it but when i put the sim in it asks for the security code, defult is 12345, but it's not recognised, i've never changed this code only the pin code.

My question: is there a certain number of times you can enter the security code and get it wrong before it locks you out?

5 iirc but it might be 3 so safe bet is to assume 3.
Reason why it's doing it at a guess is your phone's locked to the network. I know my 6610i on Orange is locked and comes up with a similar message when I try to use another SIM in it.

Yeah i though that but when i called orange they told me it wasn't an orange phone and i'd have to talk to nokia - the phone had the orange logo branded all over it and it came direct from the orange shop!

Well it sounds like an Orange phone to me :p I know mine is.
They won't unlock it for you though and nor will Nokia afaik because it'll be modifying the software and invalidating the warranty.

I'd suggest going in the Orange shop and seeing what they suggest.

Is resetting the same as unlocking?

I was told it needed to be reset, which apparently is different to being unlocked, but i think thats just so they can get more money out of me lol

check ** phone box their should be a yellow sticker/paper inside/on it that has your security code, its a safety feature, so when u put any other sim in (same network or not) it will ask for this code

Resetting and unlocking are different, i had the phone unlocked but it still asked for the security code - luckily enough i just kept trying the number i was sure it was and it eventually worked, don't really know what was happening, but it's sorted now
