Thanks. I was thinking more along the lines about after it's lost/stolen and keeping prying eyes away from the data within.
I know it's preferable not to have it go missing in the first place, but mine seems to go with me everywhere and I'd like to be in a position whereby it's not going to be the end of the world if it did go walkabout.

Use either the in built FileVault or use truecrypt.

Disable automatic login and the display of the usernames. Use a decent password.
Use 1Password and disable automatic logins and form filling in safari (or firefox, etc.), again, with a decent password.
TUAW posted a pretty hardcore security setup a while ago, including keychain shenanigans and other seemingly OTT stuff
