Hi, i have just installed internet at my girlfreinds house, mainly to be used by her 13yr old sister, and the only thing is her parents are worried about the sites that can be accessed. This leads me to asking some questions,

1. The xp computer has 5users on it, one of them being the 13yr olds, if i was to install any software would it be active for all users, as i cannot access her xp desktop due to password.

2. The main problem i can see is "adult sites/smut" and from my experience of been a teenager i knew allot about computers, and the simple clear the history was simple. and fooled my parent ; Is there some form of software that can be installed that will not let the user use any adult/blocked sites.?. one that runs hidden and cannot be i.e turned off, unless with a password, Also maybe a simple programme that loggs all sites accessed on the computer "works on all users" and would run hidden, and same again only be able to be accessed by a password.

3. I am open to suggestion as i am sure allot of you have children and know of some software that can help my problem.

Wouldn't you just be able to use I.E 7, then block the sites you don't want her to view. Also, set a password (This is do-able within I.E7's settings) which stop anyone who doesn't know, unblocking those sites ect?

If you are installing broadband there are routers that will block websites by keyword (or url).

Unless she knows the admin password for the router she won't be able to change this, plus it also 'protects' the whole household. :p

best thing to do would be to monitor her PC usage.

I wouldn't let a 13 year old on the net unsupervised.

I might be an old fart but I ask you this. Would you let her watch a prono DVD? If not then don't let her unsupervised on the net.

Problem with IE7 is she could just download firefox! I know shes only 13 but hey, I'm sure there is some software out there but the best option is probably eduction, warning her of the risks of using the internet and viruses etc

Well no, but tbh you cant expect the parents to sit there whilst she is talking on msn.

And firefox could be downloaded, they aint stupid kids these day :P

I will look into my router and see what settings it has.

Best thing to do is to talk to her like she's a young adult. Explain to her that you're gonna trust her not to do dodgy things, but explain that the logs are stored on the computer and if you felt that there was a need, you could track what sites she was visiting - hopefully this will teach her that she's got to earn your respect.

Set the blocked websites, then change her account rights so that she can't install anything without your say-so.

Oh, to answer the question about her having access to anything you install, like Net Nanny or other filtering software, is her account an Administrator's account? If not, then you can prevent her from undoing anything you do put in place. It's not going to be infallible, but it'll keep most 13 year olds sufficiently under control.
