Securing windows

I'm about to move into a student property and I've drawn the short straw and have the downstairs room.

It's a quiet road, and it's not double-glazed. So I'm worrying about potential break ins, especially as my room is at the front.

Anyway, I was wondering if there was anything out there that could aid the security of my room? Like something I could put behind the window to keep potential intruders away.

Get a couple of extra locks on the windows.
