I'm looking at backups to my main career plan, and one thing thats always interested me is security.

Does anyone here work in network security? Anti virus, anything like that? Other then taking background network qualifications and the like what routes are there into this kind of work?

Do you mean working for an actual security company like working for Esnet or a firewall company?
Writing security software?
Or working for a company that has a network and needs it securing then maintaining it?

Well leaning more towards the network security side of things, preventing intrusions, virus detections, configuring and maintaining the hardware, that side of things.

Although security software would be interesting too.

There's lots of educational routes worth considering.

I'm currently doing an MSc in Information Security at UCL, Royal Holloway also offer a very good course. Lots of certifications available as well, CISSP, CEH, Check+, OCSP etc

Cant offer much advice on the job side, as im just about to start looking myself :)

One of my mates works for a software company that develops, maintains and presumably stores info on security systems for government and public safety. Things like software for police video vans and cctv (and/or how its recorded) This is security but in the less computery sense of the usual virus and firewall type stuff

He is a Java wizard and also quite good at a few other languages

Security is a broad spectrum, but if you're talking about specific network security then start looking at the bottom-tier network qualifications - Network+, CCNA etc.

To be good at security you have to be good at the basics, so I'd start there.
