Security fail: When trusted IT people go bad

That's awesome, thanks for posting. Factor in human emotion and you have all sorts of problems in IT. I was the head of the IT department at a well known company, and I spent more time monitoring colleagues then solving problems, and when I did it was usually damn printer issues :/

I know that very well and silly staff that like to jam the printers or worse stick overhead projector transparency films into the laser printers and melt them to the rollers because they were not designed for laser printers or photocopiers. :rolleyes:
 
The security processes there are shocking. No one should ever be the sole custodian of any passwords to anything. If not to prevent that story happening but more commonly, what if that person gets hit by a bus on the way to work?

Still goes to show how few (quite large companies included) don't take their IT Security seriously enough.

Same thing happens in normal business process too though. "Oh Ann Other was the only one who know how to do that." - Not useful if said person keels over one day.

Its funny how IT is at the bottom of everyone's agenda untill something goes wrong, then all of a sudden its mission critical. :rolleyes:
You can warn people of all the possibility's but in my experience it just falls on death ears.
I work with a variety of company's and only one of those takes its security seriously.
 
Security and DR are probably the most overlooked areas. Because they cost money based on What-ifs. Trying to justify a budget increase on something that happens to a small percentage of businesses is hard work.
But you have to try because if you dont' and the unthinkable happens then it's your fault. At least if you constantly pester you can turn round when they say "How the hell did this happen?" and slap them with 20 rejected requesition forms and reply "that's why"
