Security guards - bad experience

You get in there Gary - I am sure all the nationals will be queing up to publish this.

Have you considered TV yet ? Sky News will cover any old rubbish important breaking news like this, I am sure.

Also once the BBC have verified everything - they will be in like a shot.

4 part drama, get the Kickstarter going

Press is still coming at 5pm for photos apparently and hoping I get an official crime reference number so they can publish
don't forget to put on your best compo face.

but in all seriousness people need to make a stand for things to change.

Detaining people for hours based on seemingly an idiot staff member can't be right...

I had no clue about the angela thing either...

I know someone called angela, it's not really that uncommon a name? seems really stupid and childish. if you can ask for angela, you can also just ask for help... assuming most people know what angela is and predators etc likely will...its no better than just asking for help

also if your wife said angela why would they lock her in a room for her safety lol? surely as soon as shes alone with staff, says she has no idea what you are talking about.

both of you should be let go....

Not a bad idea actually, mybe this morning would be interested too

There's a key requirement within that legislation:

"A person other than a constable may arrest without a warrant—

(a)anyone who is in the act of committing an indictable offence;

(b)anyone whom he has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be committing an indictable offence."

Assuming the OP's story is true, then this incident occurred purely on the word of a random stranger at their table saying something to the bouncer.

I certainly wouldn't want to be the person trying to justify that to a judge as "reasonable grounds"!
They probably know that nobody will bother to take them to court to prove that though.

Update

So just of phone to the police and there saying the bar said it was my wife that said the code Angela, even though that’s impossible as she’s never heard of it and was sat next to me and never went upto the bar. Clearly someone on our shared table and the police are saying there must have been a mix up on who said it to the staff there

He said they can detain people until the police arrives in the same way a security guard can detain someone for stealing in a shop was his words

He said I agree it sounds the bouncers have not treated you well but I would need to go to a solicitor as it’s becoming more of a civil matter he said.

I know a few people on here are saying this is not right and I should be able to take it further with the police but there admit no crime has been committed by holding us there

He said if I want cctv I’m best going to a solicitor too

@Gary195 there's one more option.

In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, If no one else can help and if you can find them. Maybe you can hire, The A-Team.

The Angela Team?

I'm not sure if it's different in Scotland. But people can't detain you without evidence. In a shop they would have the stolen goods as evidence. In this situation there is no evidence.

If they did a citizens arrest then you can sue them.

The whole situation seems like false imprisonment.

As soon as your wife confirmed she didn't say Angela and she wasn't in danger there was no reason to hold either of you.

The sad thing is if another woman said Angela she was, and still is in danger.

Agree with @GGizmo , your wife confirming that she didn't use this Angela phrase to say she was in danger would be the end of it, that would also back up that they have no evidence of her using it in the first place. I would be going back to the police and requesting reconsideration on this, just because they have said nothing more can be done at this point does not mean it is so, I would consider it an ongoing conversation if I were in your position.

Agreed.

I think the bouncers and bar have massively overstepped the mark based on a miscommunication their end, and a civil claim for distress could be considered, as well as potential criminal charges against the staff for illegally detaining the op, so I guess kidnap?

There is also the fact that, even if his wife had “asked for Angela”, this in itself isn’t evidence that a crime had been committed given how wide the scope is for the scheme.
