Yes they can. You rely on the community to spot the bugs and make sure you download the updates and install them regularly.
I'd recommend installing only the add-ons you need, and uninstall ones you've don't really use - easier to manage. That goes for any software - only install what you need and keep it up to date.
There's always a chance a vulnerability could be found in a piece of software and then exploited which could then allow the attacker to gain hold of the system. A good way to mitigate the risk is to make sure you are keeping your software up to date and also make sure you're running as a standard user.
