Hopefully just a quick one but my 3 security lights need to be changed as they are looking a bit dated and rusty. They're also halogen bulbs too so will look at LED replacements to make them more efficient.

The ones that are there at the moment are wired directly to an internal spur so there is no little box positioned outside that the wire that comes with the light is connected to the mains.

I dont want to have a little box next to the lights outside so my question is whether or not there is a specific type of light I need to be looking at that I can connect directly to rather than having to use the wire that may come with it?

Hope that makes sense!

Depends on the Brand you purchase, the latest one I bought from Screwfix had the junction box at the back and was very easy to wire, the older version which I bought for my parents was pre-wired.

What's the quality of the screwfix ones like?

Halogen tend to come without a cable - so you wire existing cable into the light

LED tend to come with 600mm of flex pre fitted which you tend to use a wiska box to join to the old wiring etc

You can get LED without a pre wired flex or depending on the layout of your light wiring could try to pull prewired flex through wall if it goes straight through like a garage wall to avoid a ip box on the outside wall etc or replace the flex but it will void the warranty

Ip wiska box is the best option and can be made to look neat so you barely notice it...

Figure out where ip box would look the best and where cable can enter from behind

just drill small hole in the back of the ip box big enough for the wire from house

thread wire through hole and position box where you want on wall, mark up screw holes to drill

drill and plug holes in wall

silicone the back of the box around the hole so when pushed against wall it will seal the back to the wall, mount the box over the old wire screw ip box to wall

use flex stuffing gland on bottom of ip box (might be easier to fit the gland before fixing the box to the wall fyi) to the let pre wired flex enter box and wire up connections & silicone the hole in the back of the ip box (might need to trim down the flex if too long leave just enough to get a nice neat curve/drip loop to the fitting)

fit the new light just below the box and its almost hidden, also easier to change the fitting in future
