i have an ancient CRT 19" here, was looking at LCD until i read up about SED ones, supposedly released by Toshiba sometime this year.. Apparently the difference from TFT/LCD to SED is cracking, i dont think it even has response time like CRT's?. There is a difference from plasma to SED but its only black's and slight sharpness

anybody know more about when these are out and what pricing will be like?

Dunno much about them really, but IIRC the ones coming out this years are TVs not monitors I believe, so probably not in desktop sizes, more likely to be 37/40 inch, maybe 32.

Sounds like SED is a lot closer to plasma tech than LCD, as far as I can tell its using transistors (like a LCD panel) to provide the energy to energize a phosphor coating(like a Plasma or CRT). So a kinda hybrid of the technologies.

If this is right, surely it's going to hit the classic CRT/Plasma issue. Phosphors burn. Sure the best phosphors from companies like Panasonic are getting better every year, but if you leave a phosphor screen overnight with a static issue its going to burn. Thats the big advantage TFT has over phosphor screens for computer use.

Going to have stiff competition from traditional Plasma too, Panny's 10th generation plasma is native 1920x1080p @42inch. Should see that screen on the market sometime during 2007.

Still nice to see new technologies emerging :).

Toshiba are not involved any more. Canon faced a lawsuit about their partnership with Toshiba from the patent holders and so dissolved the partnership.

SED is late and gonna be expensive. It will be a long time before it is used in monitors and as said, there will be problems with burn in.

I think for monitors, the thing to look forward to has to be OLED, though there are as many problems with that as with any new tech, especially concerning the short lifespan of the blues.

CRTs weren't exactly bad for screen burn though. I've owned probably over ten CRTs over the years, both TVs and monitors, sometimes left them on for hours with static images (especially before I knew about screen burn), and yet never had any screen burn. I don't think CRT is anything like as susceptible as plasma, so neither should SED be.

CRT's do suffer from burn in, some more than others obviously, the ones at my secondary schools were awful! Not sure how it compares with Plasma but the new plasma's are very very good in this area as for it to be a non-issue these days. SED could be the same but it is likely to still be a problem, even if very small.

It is still gonna be expensive though, i am no even sure if it will come to monitors as it is, at least not for a good while after the TV's have been out. TV's get all the new tech first these days.

I could imagine a school leaving the screens on all day with a static image on screen, whereas in home use that's unlikely. I think most normal home users would never get screen burn on a CRT TV/monitor. All PCs should have screensavers enabled and screen auto shut off enabled and games consoles/DVD players usually have screen savers too these days. The only real problem is channels with fixed graphics like a news channel, and even then it's still very unlikely you will get screen burn.

If you search the monitor forums here there's a (thankfully small) minority of people getting a kind of screen burn with LCDs.

Actually i have a link which shows their going to make monitors aswell..
http://www.behardware.com/articles/593-1/close-encounters-of-the-third-kind-sed.html

I cant see any competitor links there, i see a few advertisements but no competitors.. please remove if im wrong :(

the BeHardware article is old. It was made well before new delays with SED tech and the announcement of the Canon/Toshiba partnership dissolution. Like i said, it will be a long time before we see monitors and TV's and i fully expect the TV's to come a fair bit earlier.
