Howdy folks

TLDR; I purchased a sofa off eBay but paid outside the platform, it arrived damaged and now the seller is ignoring me, so I am wondering if there is any way to recover my money or if small claims is my best option?

But the fully story....

I am looking for some advice on a situation I am dealing with. I recently bought a sofa that was listed on eBay, I made a best offer but the seller said in order to get it delivered I would have to pay outside Ebay £700 total. They asked for it partly in cash and partly by bank transfer, rather than going through eBay’s checkout. I know this is probably not the smartest move, but it seemed okay at the time since I would get to inspect it.

The seller delivered the sofa as promised but after it arrived and a brief inspection seemed OK. Then I sat on it and quickly realised that the internals had collapsed on one side. I tried contacting them to resolve this asking them to come back and pick it up. I even said I would cover £120 for the delivery driver and the hassle but to just come take it away. Sadly after a few crappy responses telling me it was a 'deep' sofa they have blanked me.

Since I paid outside ebay via cash / bank transfer I know I am mostly screwed. I know bank transfer are basically impossible to reverse, unless there some kind of fraud involved. Does anyone know if there is any realistic way to get my money back from the bank transfer part? Has anyone had success trying to reverse or recall a transfer in a situation like this?

I’m also considering whether small claims court is a good option. If anyone has experience going that route for goods that have been missold / trashed, or tips on how to handle the process that would be great.

Any advice or ideas on what I can do next would be hugely appreciated! Let me know if you need more details. Half thinking of at least paying to get the sofa repaired.

I have contacted Ebay already and at least let them know about what they are doing. I am potentially going to contact my bank tomorrow, but don't expect them to be able to help much.

I have the guys name / bank / mobile / bank transfer details. Can probably get an address too I guess.

And the damage:

Oh I've just had a reply to say he's going to try and get it fixed.

That was unexpected... But better than nothing I guess. I did already report his account on eBay.

If you're spending that much, why not just buy something from a proper retailer where you'd have a lot of come back?

Hindsight is a great thing... Trust I me know at this point.
