Well recently i've been getting into Punk Rock a bit, so i started listening to stuff i already have (Clash, Jam etc.) and appreciating it for what it is for a change. So just to see where it takes me - any suggestions on where to go now? And also, are there any decent modern Punk bands that might be worth a look?

Thanks :)

Joy Division- An Ideal for Living (or just get Substance it has all the tracks from that EP) if you want punk and not their later post-punk material.

The Sonics- Here are the Sonics if you want early Punk

The Stooges- get their debut, Fun House and Raw Power

Pere Ubu- Modern Dance

Television- Marquee Moon

For more hardcore stuff try:

Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables by Dead Kennedys

Fear - The Record. Must listen to for punk enthusiasts.

Modern punk bands, Gallows. Best band to come out of the UK in a long time and they do a hell of a live show. Two fantastic albums, Orchestra of Wolves and Grey Britain.

I much prefer hardcore punk myself.

These were to Punk like what Metallica were to reggae.

So many bands got linked into the Punk name when they shouldn't have, obvious names being The Stranglers, Squeeze and the Police.
Sex Pistols only ever called themselves a rock n roll band but to me they were heavy rock with a bit of weird singing.
Obviously bands like MC5, the Stooges and New York Dolls were too early to be Punk and one of my all time favourite bands The Ramones weren't really Punk but the music was heading the right way.
The proper Punk bands were those that followed in the wake of The Pistols & The Clash and really believed the hype that anybody could form a band.
Such bands were The Slits, The Lurkers, The Undertones, Ruts, Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, The Boys, The Vibrators, The Adverts, Angelic Upstarts, Buzzcocks, Slaughter & The Dogs, UK Subs, Boomtown Rats (maybe), XRay Specs and a few more I can't remember.
I actually live engineered a lot of these bands in the late 70s and sometimes it was a real challenge.

The Anti Nowhere League is what you're after, I can't link to Youtube as they are very............ lets just say they make The Sex Pistols sound like Girls Aloud lol.

Favourite songs are:

  1. So What
  2. Scum
  3. We Are The League
  4. I Hate People
  5. Animal
  6. Rocker

Ah, my favourite.

(Somewhat) Chronologically -

The Undertones,
The Damned - Machine Gun Etiqutte,
The Clash - London Calling,
Ramones,
Misfits - Walk Among Us,
Black Flag - Damaged,
The Descedents - Milo Goes to College,
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables,
Bad Religion - Suffer,
Minor Threat,
Social Distortion - Mommys Little Monster,
Nirvana - Nevermind (obviously),
The Offspring - Smash,
NOFX - Punk in Drublic,
Rancid - ...And Out Come the Wolves,
Green Day - Dookie,
AFI - Black Sails in the Sunset,
The Vandals - Hitler Bad, Vandals Good,
Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview,
Social Distortion - White Light, White Heat, White Trash,
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible,
Hot Water Music - Caution,
88 Fingers Louie - Back on the Streets,
Kid Dynamite - Kid Dynamite,
Lifetime - Hello ******** (the word starts in B and ends in s),
None More Black - This is Satire,
Paint it Black - CVA,
Bigwig - Reclaimation,
Pennywise - Land of the Free?
Anti-Flag - The Terror State,
Rise Against - Revolutions Per Minute,
Strike Anywhere - Change is a Sound,
The Flatliners - The Great Awake,

And much more recently:
The Flatliners - Cavalcade,

The Loved Ones - Build & Burn.

I'm sure I've missed some.

EDIT: I missed one of the most important punk records ever made:
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come.

Pretty much this. Gallows are brilliant live.

On the topic of hardcore punk, I saw Cancer Bats here a few weeks back and they were ****ing awesome.

Cancer Bats are awesome. Yet to release at truly great record, though. Hail Destroyer is good, however.

Gallows are good but both of their records are only half good, with their fair share of dodgy tracks. Incredible live act, though.

The following are probably worth a listen, although not all are strictly punk.

Leftover Crack
F-Minus
The Dead Pets
4ft Fingers
Citizen Fish
Flogging Molly
Dropkick Murphys
Subhumans
Exploited
U.S Bombs
Bouncing Souls
Choking Victim
Voodoo Glow Skulls
HorrorPops
Nekromantix
Tiger Army
Operation Ivy

It might also be worth checking out some sampler CDs such as Punk-O-Rama, Give 'Em The Boot & Moon Ska, they're usually only around £5 per CD and you get a good selection. :D

I think I just gained a Man-crush.
