Trying to connect my macbook to a windows laptop so i can share the net. I thought it was simply just plugging in the ethernet cable and then enabling internet sharing in network connections.
However when the ethernet cable is plugged in the macbook cannot see the windows laptop and on the windows laptop it says that the network did not assign a network address to the computer

How do i get this to work?

if your wanting to share your internet connect from windows do the below:-

your need to set a static address in the same range as on your windows machine and use the windows machines IP address as the default gateway, also possible set the secondary dns server to the windows IP address, the first dns entry should be an external dns address that you have froim your ISP.

You don't need a static IP, it should automatically run a DHCP server on your network once you enable ICS. How does your PC connect to the internet, do you have 2 network cards in there?

gonna throw it out there, but if they are directly connected you sure you're using a crossover cable and not a regular network cable ?

Does this still matter nowadays? I thought most network cards and routers now automatically detected and swapped connections as necessary?

the key word being "most"

my cable modem and 2 of the 4 machines in my house certainly don't

the windows machine is connected via a usb modem.
My macbook is connected to this windows machine through what i call a ethernet cable.
how do i set these ips and stuff?

*EDIT
I connected the macbook to a windows pc (moved the usb modem to this pc) here instead of the laptop and i ran network wizard through control panel and it worked. I dont know why it wouldnt work on the laptop :s
