Seems like major Q6600 overclock problem - help please.

Hi

I recently upgraded from a E6300 to Q6600 cpu, reset my CMOS and have now tried a simple overclock. My base setting are per below

The bios has obviously reverted back to an old version after CMOS clearing (was on 1201 before I think). I try to run a basic overclock of my FSB by changing it from 1066 (266 or 2400 mhz) to 1150. I leave all other setting on default/auto apart from unlinking the FSb fromt he memory which sits at 800. This seems to run fine. I then up it to 1250. My PC gets to the bios load screen and then freezes, it take another CMOS clear to fix it.

Should I be manually adjusting any other settings or is somethign seriously wrong.

Any help appreciated for a newb.

1) Set the CPU voltage in your BIOS to your VID that coretemp reports. That's the minimum you'll need to get going.

2) Keep the memory below 800mhz using the dividers, and also manually punch in the values for your RAM. Look on ocuk/manufacturers website for timings and voltage and put these in manually instead of leaving them on auto. I can see CPU-Z reports them not being correct at the moment.

3) Notch the NB voltage up a step from auto, and two steps in you have 4 sticks on RAM. (unless you already have done so)

4) Disable C1E and Speedstep to make sure that isn't interfering with the overclock.

1) I am assuming you mean to to 1.2875V per my screenshot? Shouldn't I need 1.344 per my CPU-Z screenshot?

2) I am not sure what you mean by dividers. I unlink the memory from the FSB and leave it at 800mhz I dont think there is anything about dividers in the bios. The timings it comes up with by itself. The timings appear to be 4 4 4 12 per the makers website. Assuming it should manually adjust them to this and leave it at 800mhz?

3) Not sure what my northbridge voltage is on auto? Can't see it in my screenshots - might be me being blind.

Okay, 1st off, as above you need to find out the recommended voltage for your RAM, then manually set it to that in the bios.

Next, set the CPU voltage to 1.3v. I would be surprised if you got anywhere much below that.

Then get clocking and make sure you test for stability using Prime95 and watch the temps using CoreTemp (don't let the cores go above 70c)

Make small increases, checking for stability and watching temps each time, although i have yet to see a G0 that won't hit 3ghz pretty easily.

If you have more than 2 sticks of RAM, again as above, you will need to raise the Northbridge voltage a notch, but not too much.

You should be able to see the extra voltages by using a free app like HWmonitor... http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

C1E and EIST have never made any difference to my overclocks at all, I have always used it, as it keeps temps down when raw CPU power is not needed, but you can turn them off until you get your best clock and then try turning them on again if you prefer.
 
Your RAM timings definately need looking at as 5-5-5-31 is not right lol

I overclocked a mates q6600 today and all it needed was the RAM set to correct timings and voltage, and then the FSB to 333 and that was it. I would start at default and try it, if it fails then you may well need a slight voltage increase on the CPU.

So I should set it to 4 4 4 12 and pick the lower voltage 1.8v or should it be higher given that I have 4 sticks? Do I need to bother adjusting the Mhz - at the moment they show as 800 in the Bios?

As I said the Nothbridge voltage is set to auto so I would have no idea what to raise it a notch to? Any ideas.

P5n-e is awful for clocking quads. My Q6600 would only reach 2.8 no matter what I did to it on that board. I've had it running at 3.8 on my P5Q.

If you manage a stable 3ghz on that mobo I'll be amazed.

but i was trying to overclock my Q6600, just a small one to 2.8ghz (first time), and after it booted, i looked on cpu-z and the speed appeared to jump between 2.8 and 2.1.
running on a p5k-e board.
really bad overclock or normal?
 
333 (1333) FSB should be perfectly fine on a 650i with a quad...

Problem with 650i boards is teh massive FSB holes... theres probably loads between 266 and 333, also ~350-450 is unusable on most (tho some boards have an ok strap at 400). So unless you have a good clocked that can do 3.7-3.8gig or so for the highest FSB speeds above the common holes, your probably stuck to 2.85-3.2gig range.

That will be speedstep changing the multiplier from whatever you set it to (9 being standard) and 6 when it's not under load. Don't worry about it, it's saving you electricity.
