I am in desparate need f some help from anyone. My iMac will not connect to the internet. All I get is a self assigned IP address. I have tried renewing the DHCP, restarting the computer, resetting the network, etc. Nothing seems to work. I have mountain lion installed.

Have you tried making a new location in Network Preferences?

We get 169 IP addresses quite often at work and a router reset fixes it every time, weird. I had it once here and I just had to renew the DHCP lease, but you've tried both of them. Weird.

Is it only this one or other computers in the house doing the same? If you have an ethernet cable hooked in as well, you might wanna go to System Preferences > Network > small cog next to the + and - > Set service order.

Make sure Wifi is at the top, then come back to the main Network panel and go Advanced > TCP/IP > Click renew DHCP lease. See what happens =]
