First post here and looking for some advice please :D

I'm in the process of building a small home server system to run 24/7. The intention is this will also store all my mkv movies to stream via Plex to a Samsung smart tv as well as laptops and ipad. We have 4 laptops that will be connecting potentially at the same time to, although only expect to stream 2 movies at any one time.

Current plan is the following:

Case: Fractal Design Node 304 (already have this)
Mobo: ASRock Z87E-ITX
CPU: Core i3-4150
SSD: Samsung 120GB EVO 850 (as boot drive)
HDD: WD 4TB drives (initially 2 or 3)
PSU: Seasonic 360GP

Would appreciate some advice on several things:

1. Does anyone have any experience of the motherboard or alternative better options?
2. Will the chosen CPU be sufficiently powerful? Would a T version CPU be worthwhile with the lower energy usage?
3. Any advice on RAM, amount, speed and brand gratefully received.
4. Any other comments on the proposed components/suggestions for alternatives

Many thanks

Hi.

Are you wanting a motherboard with WiFi+Bluetooth? as Gigabyte do a Z97 and H97 chipset board in itx form factor with these features.

Hi.

No great need for wifi and bluetooth as this system will be wired into my network. I guess bluetooth could be handy for easiest linking of mouse and keyboard when doing some set-up, but not essential.

Well here's one of those boards - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-505-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2813

RAM - only Z87/Z97 support anything past 1600Mhz (2133/2400Mhz etc) so a simple 8GB teamgroup that is on offer on the front page will do fine with this H97 chipset.

Is the Gigabyte board likely to be better than the ASRock? Does the Z97 chipset give any advantages over the Z87? I see there is a b-grade Gigabyte Z87 board on the site

Anything is better than ASrock.

Z97+H97 will support Broadwell CPUs and err has SATA express and err m.2 slots (all depending on the particular board).

The i3 will be sufficient for your uses.
