Self-build outbuilding

It'll have some dumbbells in the corner :D

I won't be running my business from it, I'm in full time employment, but I'll be here 1-2 days a week every week.

home office can usually be justified as for the enjoyment of the dwelling house or whatever it is - as long as you don't have employees coming in everyday!

Makes sense, I was just half-remembering something I was told a few years ago when I was talking to someone about setting up my own business.

Subbed!

My uncle and I are about to build a ~22ft by ~10ft living area / log-cabin in the garden - should be done within the next 10 days. Going over to finalize with him tomorrow evening.

He's a builder (has been for a long time), has done a log-cabin for his own place too and has roughly come up with a cost of materials at £1500.

Excellent!

This is a quick mock up of what I have in my head:

The french doors will allow for a good amount of natural light while I'm working but will be positioned so that I'm not in direct sunlight for the largest portion of the day. I can do away with them and replace with doors and windows if it's more financially viable though.

Ultimately I'm very flexible on all of it, I just want a space. I've got an extra door there to act as garden storage as I do have a shed there and might still have a requirement after I've knocked it down - though hopefully a good clean out of the garage will take most of what is to be retained :)

For inspiration, I bookmarked this guy's self-build a while back;

It'll be a couple of years before I attempt one, though.

Very interesting, thanks :)

Take your pick - https://dunsterhouse.co.uk/garden-offices

I've got a log cabin from them, superb quality. It's used as a gym so insulation wasn't a factor, but it does get very cold in the winter.

You can probably find a local fitter who will do it for a lot less than quoted on there. Took 2 guys 6 hours to do my 5x3m log cabin.

They are quite interesting. My Dad is very competent in builds, I wonder if he'd run it and let me and a couple of mates be labourers :D

Got a fair amount to do in sorting the site out first before any of that. If I don't build something there I'll end up decking it probably so I still need to clear the shed and contents and level out all the groundings.

Heard a lot of talk about outbuildings and decking being perfect homes for rats. That's something I'd like to avoid at all costs, so that's first job.
