Hi folks,

I've always bought pre-made systems before but despite many reservations I'm going to self build my next one. Should be fun because I have huge hands and limited patience...

I've read around for a few weeks to try and educate myself and have come up with this spec.:

Case: Antec Nine Hundred 900
CPU: Q9550 or Q9650 (depends on price drops when Nephalem arrives)
GPU: ATI 4850 HDTV out 512MB GDDR3
Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Deluxe
RAM: Corsair 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 tHIS NOW DOUBLED TO TOTAL OF 8GB on advice.
HDD's: 2 x Samsung SpinPoint 1TB Hard Drive SATAII (32MB Cache) & 1 x old 320GB hard drive from current system for OS - changed on advice to Samsung SpinPoint F1 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache will this do the job okay?
OS: Vista Home Premium - OEM - 64-bit
PSU: Antec EarthWatts 650W PSU. Selected because it's the wattage that was recommended to me. Also same manufacturer as the case so must be a guaranteed fit? Or are all PSU's the same shape / size? Forgive my noobiness :)

I have a limited understanding of computer components so I'd appreciate any advice from you guys on improvements, incompatibilities, things to watch out for etc.

I'm looking for an easy build for a first timer, with longevity of case for future upgrades in a few years.

My usage will be primarily video editing of HDV footage using Sony Vegas. My current system specs are Athlon FX-53 (2.4GHz) processor, 2GB RAM, and a Radeon X800XT GPU. Although this system copes with HDV footage the render times are very long. I presume I'd see a marked improvement using the new system?

BWT - Sony Vegas is not GPU accelerated and I don't game so if I needed to save cash I could always reduce the GPU to a cheaper model. (Budget is circa £800 - no monitor etc. needed).

Thanks in advance for your assistance folks.

Jon.

Looks good, only I'm not sure about the PSU (never heard of it tbh!). I'd personally change the PSU for around about a 600-650w modular PSU such as the offerings from Seasonic or Corsair. I'd save the cash on the GPU and use it to get 8gb of RAM, assuming that the video editing you do is memory intensive.

The Hi-Power PSU isn't that bad, but must have compromises for the price of it. CORSAIR IS THE WAY FORWARD!

Thanks folks. Have made some changes on the advice given.

Any more advice appreciated.

Also, the shipping charges for O/C are high compared to some other companies. Are you allowed to collect from the site? (I sometimes pass down that way)

OCUK have a proper retail shop, so you can go in and buy everything there and then. Also, forum members with over 250 posts get free shipping, but I think it's going to be a while before you get to that stage ;)

Spec looks good btw.
